Registering an Out-of-State Car in Kentucky
If you buy a car titled in another state, or move here with one, you'll title and register it at your county clerk's office.
What to bring
- Proof of Kentucky insurance with an issue date within 45 days
- Your Kentucky driver's license, Kentucky ID card, or Social Security card
- A completed form TC96-182 and the signed-over title, with notarized signatures. If your state only issues a registration or bill of sale, bring that instead.
- Proof the car passed a sheriff's inspection
- An odometer disclosure (listed by the Barren County Clerk)
Deadline
The Barren County Clerk says to title and register within 15 days of purchase.
Tax
It's the same 6% usage tax, figured on the notarized sale price (with the half-of-trade-in floor) or on the NADA retail value (details). Barren County notes that dealers in some states, including Indiana, can collect Kentucky's tax for you. Ohio dealers don't, so an Ohio title needs a properly completed TC96-182.
Example fees from one county
Barren County lists a $9.00 title application fee and a $25.00 plate fee for one year. Your county may differ.
Getting it home
The state says Kentucky residents can't use a Kentucky transit tag to bring an out-of-state purchase home. The seller's state DMV should provide temporary registration.
